Dr. Johna Pointek, PsyD, Licensed Psychologist

JohnaPointek-1.jpg

Dr. Pointek graduated with her PsyD from the California School of Professional Psychology and has been a NY State licensed psychologist since 2001. She has been on the faculty at Pace University for 25 years, enjoying preparing the next generation of counseling students to develop the skills to establish their professional identities and become independent practitioners.  When not teaching, her clinical experience has spanned for the last 19 years, where she has been working with the adult and older adult population, helping to transition them through life events and challenges, increasing self awareness and improving relationships. She has been pleased to work with individuals who are diverse in physical ability, race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, and life circumstances. She feels confident that her strong skills, both as a psychologist and educator, allow her to be prepared to better understand others and help them get to a more healthy place in their lives.

It is very important to Dr. Pointek to understand why you are beginning/continuing the therapy process at this point in your life. Why today? What have you been doing so far that has worked for you? Why is it no longer working? She wonders if it is your job to work together to understand how your life has changed, possibly you, your relationships, the environment you live in or maybe even something else. She has utilized and taught a variety of different therapeutic skills; empathy, good listening, person centered therapy/care, CBT, DBT, behavioral techniques, to support clients coping with a countless number of challenges. But most of all, she believes that we need to remember that there is no magic wand or pill that is given in therapy that makes us feel better, it is the relationships and hard work between the therapist and client that fosters change. When not working, Dr. Pointek enjoys crafting, camping, travel and movies.
